About Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital














This hospital in Kpando was established by the German physician Margret Mary Marquart in 1960. There is an outpatient department, a pharmacy, a laboratory, an x-ray department, a morgue, an eye clinic, a public health unit, an HIV/AIDS clinic and a canteen. There are also four wards: a medical ward, a surgical ward, a maternity ward and a children’s ward. There is currently one surgical room and the hospital is working on opening a second room where only gynecological surgeries will be performed. The hospital has access to an ambulance which is mainly used to transport severely ill patients to the regional hospital or more specialized hospitals in Accra.

A volunteer or intern will get the opportunity to observe at different wards and shadow a doctor or a medical assistant. The actual role a volunteer or intern plays in the hospital depends on qualifications. A student will mainly observe and assist. To make the experience  ..................​
versatile it is possible to do a small research and write a report for the hospital to share experience and knowledge to help in improving the healthcare. A qualified medical professional, will be given more tasks and responsibilities. He or she might be asked to organize training for the staff members of the hospital to share knowledge and experience, or to accompany the ambulance in patient transport.
