This hospital in Kpando was established by the
German physician Margret Mary Marquart in 1960. There is an outpatient
department, a pharmacy, a laboratory, an x-ray department, a morgue, an eye
clinic, a public health unit, an HIV/AIDS clinic and a canteen. There are also
four wards: a medical ward, a surgical ward, a maternity ward and a children’s
ward. There is currently one surgical room and the hospital is working on
opening a second room where only gynecological surgeries will be performed. The
hospital has access to an ambulance which is mainly used to transport severely
ill patients to the regional hospital or more specialized hospitals in Accra.
A volunteer or intern will get the opportunity to
observe at different wards and shadow a doctor or a medical assistant. The
actual role a volunteer or intern plays in the hospital depends on
qualifications. A student will mainly observe and assist. To make the
experience ..................
versatile it is
possible to do a small research and write a report for the hospital to share
experience and knowledge to help in improving the healthcare. A qualified
medical professional, will be given more tasks and responsibilities. He or she
might be asked to organize training for the staff members of the hospital to
share knowledge and experience, or to accompany the ambulance in patient
transport.
